'Entropy' at UMOCA - Salt Lake City, UT

The Utah Museum of Contemporary Art (UMOCA) will feature Entropy as part of their As The Lake Fades exhibition - this will include a large-scale mural of 'Silent Sea'!

Since the 1980s, the Great Salt Lake has shrunk in size by over two thirds. Referred to as an “Environmental Nuclear Bomb” in The New York Times, the Great Salt Lake’s disappearance is symbolic of growing environmental concerns that affect us all. As the Lake Fades features artists looking at land and water use in the West, humans’ relationship to place, and the role of “landscape” in contemporary art amid the Anthropocene. Specifically, the exhibition considers what Utah looks like without the lake and what effect the circumstances of its disappearance might have.

The exhibition will be on display from January 26, 2024.

UMOCA is at 20 S W Temple St, Salt Lake City, UT 84101.

'Lake Effect' at Modern West Fine Art - Salt Lake City, UT

The Great Salt Lake is the largest saltwater lake in the Western Hemisphere, serving as a vital resource for both human and wildlife activity. However, alarming trends indicate a substantial decline in water levels, with the lake experiencing a two-thirds volume reduction since 1985. Without immediate intervention, the lake could vanish within the next five years, causing an environmental and economic collapse of a place many call home

As a contribution to the crucial Great Salt Lake conversation, Modern West will open Lake Effect, a six-person exhibition with artworks depicting the current state of the lake’s decline along with the detrimental aftermath that may ensue. This group show will feature Modern West represented artists Al Denyer, Tom Judd, Eric Overton and Diane Tuft, along with guest artist Alexandra Fuller. Lake Effect will also feature artwork, text and poetry from activist and author Terry Tempest Williams.

The exhibition will be on display January 19 through March 2, 2024.

-
In conjunction with the opening artist reception on January 19, Modern West will also host a ‘Creative Call to Action to Save our Great Salt Lake’ panel discussion on Saturday, January 20, from 12-2 PM.
For more information on the panel and to RSVP, click here.

Modern West Fine Art is at 412 S 7th W, Salt Lake City, UT 84104.
